Would You Buy Microsoft’s New AI PCs?

  • Microsoft's new computers, Surface Pro 6 and Surface Pro 10, come with advanced AI capabilities powered by Neural Processing Units (NPUs).

  • AI PCs offer enhanced data privacy and security by processing sensitive information locally on the computer, reducing the risk of data breaches.

Microsoft is set to launch the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Pro 10, featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities through Neural Processing Units (NPUs). These AI PCs distinguish themselves by integrating AI into both hardware and software, offering benefits like improved data privacy, reduced latency, cost savings, and user customization. The decision to upgrade to an AI PC depends on individual needs, as existing cloud-based AI solutions may suffice for many users.

The trend of incorporating advanced AI chips into personal computers mirrors the historical progression from Central Processing Units (CPUs) to Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). While Microsoft's AI-enhanced Surface Pro devices represent a significant technological leap, the practicality of AI cloud computing remains a more accessible choice for most users, raising questions about the widespread adoption of AI PCs in the evolving computing landscape.

Flying Cars Are Officially Hitting the Market…And You Don’t Need A License.

  • Pivotal is selling a personal flying vehicle called Helix, designed for both new and experienced pilots.

  • Helix costs $190,000, includes training, and has a unique design that allows it to switch between vertical and horizontal flight modes for ease of use.

Pivotal, backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, is introducing Helix, an Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft available for purchase at $190,000. Designed for both novice and experienced pilots, Helix is controlled with simple joysticks and fly-by-wire controls, offering ease of use reminiscent of a video game. The two-week training provided by Pivotal at their Palo Alto headquarters is sufficient to operate Helix, which qualifies as a Part 103 ultralight aircraft, eliminating the need for pilot certification.

The aircraft's unique "tilt aircraft" architecture allows it to seamlessly transition between vertical and horizontal flight modes. With safety features such as water landing capability, autopilot for takeoff and landing, and a parachute, Helix aims to make personal flying accessible and safe. It comes in three configurations, priced from $190,000 to $260,000, and may serve as a litmus test for integrating such innovative aircraft into general airspace, potentially having future applications in public service and defense.

Microsoft researchers use AI to discover material that could transform batteries.

  • AI identified 18 materials among 32 million, which could reduce Lithium use in batteries by 70%.

  • This will benefit the environment by addressing water and energy demands and land harm caused by Lithium battery production.

Microsoft researchers have employed artificial intelligence to sift through 32 million potential materials and identify 18 candidates capable of reducing the use of Lithium in batteries by 70%. This breakthrough carries significant environmental benefits, addressing the current issues associated with lithium-based batteries, including high water and energy consumption and environmental damage during mining.

The capital-intensive nature of lithium extraction is also alleviated by this discovery. Microsoft asserts that the AI-driven process marks a revolutionary phase in scientific discovery, drastically shortening the time required for such breakthroughs from years to weeks, potentially paving the way for more sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions.
