AI May Just Have Saved Millions of Lives

  • Antimicrobial resistance poses a major threat to public health.

  • Researchers from MIT, Harvard, and the Broad Institute used an AI to new class of antibiotics to treat drug-resistant staph infections.

Researchers from MIT, Harvard, and the Broad Institute have achieved a groundbreaking feat by harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to discover a new class of antibiotics. This breakthrough holds particular importance in addressing the global health crisis caused by antibiotic resistance, especially in the context of staph infections.

The team utilized AI to sift through 39,000 compounds, successfully identifying 283 antibiotics proven to be safe and effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This innovative approach not only provides hope but also presents a promising solution for tackling the challenges posed by drug-resistant staph infections worldwide.

Google’s New Household Robots

  • Google is investing into robots that can perform household chores.

  • DeepMind developed AutoRT to help robots understand things better using big models.

Google is investing in smart robots for homes, thinking they can handle tasks like organizing, prepping meals, and cooking. DeepMind, a Google part, created AutoRT. It uses big models to make robots understand the world better. These models, like those in ChatGPT, help robots learn as they go.

Visual models help robots see objects for safety and adjusting to new situations. AutoRT was tested for seven months, managing multiple robots at once with a focus on safety, guided by a "robot constitution." Google also made SARA-RT to make AI decisions faster and RT-Trajectory to help robots understand physical actions. These advancements take us closer to a future where AI bots can handle household chores well.

Election Year Is About To Be Wild…

  • There’s likely going to be a tsunami of AI deepfakes during this presidential election."

  • The Federal Election Commission and Congress are considering legislation to combat this potential issue.

In the upcoming 2024 U.S. election, there's a rising concern that artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to make fake videos and images, tricking people and causing confusion. These advanced fakes might be used to spread false information during political campaigns, making people believe things that aren't true.

Efforts are currently being made by the Federal Election Commission and Congress to create rules and regulations to control this technology, but it's still not clear how well these measures will work in stopping the spread of misleading content. The big challenge is figuring out how to protect the fairness of the election process as AI technology continues to rapidly advance.
